A TREATISE FOR LEGAL PRACTITIONERS
AND
INTERNATIONAL INVESTORS

BOOK DESCRIPTION
This is the most current, complete and authoritative TREATISE on Mexican law especially prepared by Mexico's leading experts on business law, foreign investment and international trade for the benefit of U.S. and Canadian legal practitioners and international investors.

The contributing authors were selected from Mexico's largest and most prestigious law firms from Mexico City, Monterrey, Tijuana and Mexicali as well as key officials from federal agencies of the Government of Mexico such as the Secretariat of Economy (formerly SECOFI), the Mexican Institute of Intellectual Property (IMPI) and the Secretariat of Communications and Transport (SCT). The TREATISE has proven its value as a legal tool and a practical guide for entrepreneurs, government officials, legislators, diplomats and academicians.

The MEXICAN LAW TREATISE appeared in two volumes published by West Group in 1998. Volumes 1 and 2 are formed by 28 chapters, 7 Appendices and a total of almost twelve hundred pages. Each chapter discusses in a clear and systematic manner a specific area of Mexican law governing business, foreign investment and international trade. Furthermore, each chapter is complemented by these practical additions:

  1) A summary;
2) Five legal questions and answers;
3) A sample of a Mexican legal document;
4) A U.S. bibliography;
5) A Mexican bibliography in Spanish; and
6) A bilingual Legal Glossary (English/Spanish).

The seven Appendices are: I. Synopsis of Mexican Legislation on Business, Investment and Trade; II. Table of International Agreements in force between Mexico and the United States; III. Table of International Agreements in force between Mexico and Canada; IV. Directory of Mexico's Federal Agencies involved in business and foreign investment; V. Directory of Mexican Private Entities involved in Business, Investment and Trade in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey and Tijuana; VI. Legal and Official Acronyms; and VII. List of Mexican Consulates in the United States and Canada.

Currently, the TREATISE is formed by four volumes. Volumes 3 and 4 were added in June of 2001. Volume 3 is formed by eleven chapters discussing brand new areas of Mexican law. In addition, this volume contains the English translation of the latest Mexican statutes on anti-trust, telecommunications, foreign investment regulations, maquiladoras, ports and fishing.

Volume 4 is formed by four chapters discussing the most recent developments in international trade. In particular, the successful negotiations which led Mexico to the signing of a Free Trade Agreement with the European Union (including as a special appendix the complete English text of this Agreement), as well as Mexico's new bilateral agreements for the protection and promotion of foreign investment, are included in this volume.
